This section explains:

• The basics of sentencing as outlined in the Youth Criminal Justice Act (called "the Act" on this web site)
• How judges decide if it is a good idea to give a custodial sentence. This means you will not be allowed to go home for a specified period of time and you must live in the place where you are sent. It is not the same as going to jail.
