Objectives
This section will discuss the basic principles of sentencing as outlined in the YCJA. Considerations for deciding whether it is appropriate to give a custodial sentence will also be detailed.
Sentencing is the process by which the judge comes to a decision about what sanctions will be appropriate for youth who are guilty of a crime. The YCJA includes a specific purpose and set of principles to guide judges in deciding on a fair and appropriate sentence for youth.
